There are many things that we as home owners can do to save money on
plumbing and heating related issues around the house. Some are no brainers
and you've heard them before and some you probably have never thought of
before. Some of these things won't fit your life style and some you will find very
easy and worthwhile to do. This is just intended to be several brief descriptions
of ways to save your hard earned money. Some of these may have links to a
more in depth explanation so if you want more info on any of these be sure to
move your mouse over the subject to see if it's clickable.
Test your water pressure- It should be about 55-60 psi at the valves behind
the washing machine. If its to high it will reduce the life of the water heater and
most every plumbing fixture. If it's to high adjust or replace the water pressure
Fix any water leaks right away- Leaks almost never get better, more likely it
will blow apart when it cost more after hours plus you will have mold or property
damage costs also.
Run cold water while washing greasy pans- I know it isn't as easy to clean
but the grease floats in a solid form in cold water and won't coat the pipes and
plug nearly as often. Of course it's even better to wipe as much grease out with
paper towels first.
Replace old thermostats with new programable stats- During heating
season progam the thermostat to be colder at night while you are under the
blankets or when you are at work and set it to warm up just before you wake or
Wash the laundry in cold water- Most of todays laundry soaps work just fine
with cold water, but if you must do whites in hot don't forget to set the machine
back to cold for the next loads.
Run the dishwasher and laundry only when you have full loads- It takes
virtually the same amount of water to do a half load as a full load so try to plan
it so you only wash when you have a full load.
Replace warn weather stripping on doors and windows- this saves on the
gas bill in the winter and the elctric bill in summer ac times.
Ask if we have any coupons or specials- It never hurts to ask so don't be
shy. Companies offer discounts and promotions to both give existing clients a
reward and to draw in new clients so either way they're for you.
Set the water heater to pilot when you are away- If you have a vacation
home or your going on a trip setting the water heater to pilot will keep the water
heater from lighting the burner every couple of hours.
